Diamond Light Source

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron. It works like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists from around the UK (and further afield) can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines, and from viruses to vaccines.

Why work for us

Diamond is a unique environment, offering world-leading scientific and engineering challenges to staff and students. As the UK’s synchrotron, we collaborate with colleagues from around the world to deliver our science, underpinned by exceptional engineering and software. Synchrotron science is incredibly interdisciplinary, and scientists and engineers at Diamond work on diverse research questions that have real impact in fields from medicine to materials science.

Training and development

We offer a great package of training whatever your discipline, with supportive and ambitious managers and supervisors committed to your development. We seek to equip all of our staff with the best skills for their research, software development or engineering career. We offer bespoke training packages for all staff and students, whether you are here on a short summer placement, studying for a PhD, or embarking on a career as a software scientist or engineer. We also provide access to conferences and networking opportunities.

What we are looking for

  • Undergraduates: We offer summer and year-long placements for undergraduates in a range of disciplines, with projects that range from developing software to preparing and analysing samples.
  • Graduates: Our graduate roles in engineering and software are a great way to embark on a career with bespoke training and development.
  • PhD students: We co-fund more than 80 PhD studentships with partners across the UK and Europe in diverse scientific disciplines. We offer our students an enhanced stipend, world-class supervisors and access to world-leading facilities.
